Academic Pursuits

My undergraduate years at UNSW were a bizaare combination of ridiculous late nighters/all nighters in the computing labs with a bunch of techo geeks and long lazy days inbetween lectures and tutorials on the sand 4mins up the road from the university at Coogee, Bronte and Tamarama Beaches doing our "readings"...cramming in all that neural networks, machine learning, distributed database development...whilst sitting on the sand, eating our grapes and gazing happily out into the big wide open...

I remember my friend Ange always asking me, the same question, every single time we were at the beach, sitting there on our towels, looking out thinking how amazing it all was. "What would you do Sorubi, if right this very second, a tsunami came and hit this beach...would you run? Would you sit there passively, and soak it up, knowing you were gonna die anyway, what would you do?". We never really answered it. It seemed so crazy pre 2004 that a tsunami would ever hit anywhere. But I sometimes wonder what those people just like us, sitting happily on those beaches in Asia did in those moments just before...
